Tonight is the night so many people have been waiting for! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is now out, and you can bet there will be a whole lot of sick days used up today. There are midnight launches taking place everywhere, and having been at one of the MW2’s midnight release parties at Gamestop last year, it will be a joyous night for some pretty hardcore gamers.

I became the envy of the vast majority of my friends when I received a pre-release copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Friday. I popped the game in my system and was immediately greeted by a slew of messages wondering how I had gotten it so early, and how others could get their hands on it. I mean, today – the actual release date of the game – was SO far off! I closed all the messages – I simply couldn’t wait to get started – got comfortable, and started the main campaign. It was completely awesome. Here’s a rundown of my experience so far.

Everyone's favorite soldier, Soap McTavish.
Everyone’s favorite soldier, Soap McTavish.

In a continuation from Modern Warfare 2, the first level of this game starts out with Soap being transported to a makeshift hospital in the middle of nowhere. As he flutters in and out of consciousness, you’re taken into New York City, which is being completely overrun by foreign invaders. Buildings are crumbling; gunfire is everywhere, its absolute chaos. As you make your way to the New York Stock exchange, you’re greeted by enemies by the dozens. The addition of dual scopes – new to this series – is a pretty great feature, and a welcome addition to your arsenal. I found myself quickly switching between the red-dot sight and the ACOG zoom scope to pick off guys both near and far from me. The goal of the first mission is to destroy a signal jammer that has been keeping the United States defenses at bay. You need to fight your way through the Stock Exchange building and up onto the roof in order to disable the device. You won’t be getting it done easily though, as there are snipers and gunmen waiting around every corner, sniping at you from rooftops and through windows. Once you disable the device, you need to fend off attack helicopters in order to get onto your getaway chopper. Once aboard, you’re ambushed by fighter helicopters and you much man the turret gun and fell the attackers before they turn you into rubble. It was honestly one of the most engaging first levels in the whole series; it was frantic, and the chopper fight at the end was a thrill. I couldn’t wait to see the second level.

Get to the Choppa!
Get to the Choppa!

The second level starts with you using an underwater propeller device to plant mines on a patrolling submarine. You’re swimming under a collapsed bridge with the people who’ve perished – and all of their cars – still underneath you. It’s a pretty solemn scene that ends as you make your way out into the open water. After planting and detonating the mines, you board the sub to find the codes that will allow you to stop a missile launch that is intended to wipe out the entire eastern seaboard. You make your way through the bowels of the sub – the enemies have laser sights on their weapons, which makes for a nail biting experience as you see them scanning all over the place for you – and the combat is very ‘close-quarters. You find the keys and codes, and have to man the computers to disarm the launch. Once finished, you’re tasked with escaping the sinking sub, and the boat race that follows is a beautiful looking – albeit white knuckled – race to get to your evac point. Blowing up ships along the way and dodging falling debris are all commonplace, and you feel a real sense of accomplishment as you get away. The view of the decimated New York City brings a somber end to an action packed mission.

A city in ruins...
A city in ruins…

The final mission I played started out as a simple plane ride which quickly turns grave when you’re hijacked and the plane starts falling from the sky. You run through the aisles only to – after the plane takes a nosedive – find yourself shooting at enemies while floating in the anti-gravity environment triggered by the quick descent. You’re trying to aim as you’re being shot at by other floating enemies. The experience is like none other I’ve had in the series so far.

As of the writing of this article I haven’t had a chance to play much more, but I can only expect things to get much better as the game goes on. We’ll undoubtedly get a disturbing scene similar to MW2’s “No Russian” scene – which in Modern Warfare 3 – if rumors are correct – will involve child fatalities in a bombing attempt on London. We will most likely lose some more of our beloved main characters to acts of violence. But either way, I can’t wait to see what’s next!
